Phriday, Volume 3 - randallmurrow.com

Yes, another website (Laurie, I’m catching up). Actually I’ve owned randallmurrow.com longer than this domain or fstoptheworld but have had a difficult time figuring out what to do with it. Music-oriented? Photography portfolio? How about both? I finally decided that it would be about me, since it is my name and all. So all the various bits that are me will be included. Link page is not up yet but hopefully should be by the end of the day.

I spent quite a bit of time working on a Joomla installation, reworking a template I found and making it my own. I actually got quite close to the publish stage, but decided it was too hacky and a bit too slick for my taste. Oh, if I had design and coding skills, the website I could create! So yesterday I completely uninstalled Joomla, did a quick Wordpress installation, found a clean and roomy theme to abuse, and spent an hour or two putting in all of the content. Presto chango.

Where does that leave randydandy and fstoptheworld? Likely I will keep this site and link to it from there in the short-term. A longer-term project is to figure out a clean way to incorporate it into the larger framework of the site without abandoning this domain. And I really should keep more of a focus on the expat nature of my experience here, that being my original intent with this blog.

The jury is still out on fstoptheworld. I’ve started attracting some new commenters without really promoting the site, and I’ve been asked to do an interview for the London Photobloggers website, so my traffic there might pick up. That might encourage me to tend to it better than I currently do. Right now it tends to be an afterthought. Even after abandoning Flickr last fall and starting fresh in January, it’s so much easier to build a community and network there than it is on a photoblog. Need to give it some thought. Might just integrate it into the new domain as well.

I also want to develop my story-telling abilities. That seems like such a basic skill, but I feel so inept at it. And going to the theater and watching TV these days, it seems I am in good company. I think it would help my photography tremendously, but I’d also like to pursue it for its own value.

OK, enough rambling.

One thing you might consider is putting your work on Flickr and then putting your best ones on the photoblog. You could even use Flickr’s photo sharing capabilities for it by going into All Sizes. Here is an example.

I’m glad the blog will continue. I love reading about your adventures over there.
