Phriday, Volume 10 - Internet Manners

1st August, 2008 by randy

So I get an email from JPG announcing that another member has added me as a contact. So I pop over to their profile, see their submitted photos for the next issue, do my voting duty, and finally add them as a contact as well.

Complete reciprocation.

Except the reciprocal exchange only involved the contact business. My votes have not changed since my last visit.

Another photographic community comprised largely of attention whores. It’s exhausting.

So, if their work is utter crap, are you obliged to vote for them just because they add you as a contact? ….

Why did you feel the need to add them? Just for reciprocation? Just so they would vote for you? I totally don’t understand that part of social media.

I suppose I didn’t make myself clear. I received the contact notice, went to his profile, saw content I liked, and acted accordingly. This included voting for the submitted photos which I thought fit the themes, leaving a comment or two on photos which resonated with me, etc. Participating with him. And also adding him as a contact. I just assumed since he added me as a contact, he had also made sort of connection with my content and behaved accordingly. It only takes a minute or less to do something. A comment, a fave, a vote.

I don’t think this exchange is unique to social media. I think it’s a larger issue of social protocol. Not being selfish. Exchange. Even if I don’t add someone who has visited my page as a contact, vote for them, fave, etc, I can at least leave a meaningful comment on a photo.

“Just so they would vote for you?” I hope you don’t think I’m that self-centered. I made an assumption that he had left a trace, since most of my contacts have done so. Maybe my rant proves my selfishness.
