No, our smoke detectors are freakishly sensitive. A small puff of smoke from the toaster sets off the kitchen alarm, which sets off the rest of the alarms in the building, causing me to prematurely eject the toast from the toaster. You expect a charred remembrance of bread destined for the waste bin. But no, it’s usually just approaching a perfectly toasted state, with perhaps one small corner that got a little too close to the burner and is subsequently darker than the rest of the slice.

This happens 9 times out of 1o when we make toast. It last happened only minutes ago. One evening (early morning, actually) I heard it happen to the neighbors upstairs. No, we will not die by fire here from toasters. Or Jay’s Dell laptop battery.
